The Aegon and Babolat Summer Leagues are underway and a lot of tennis is being played across the County.
The Aegon League involving both singles and doubles runs between April and July. The results are available on-line but here are a few highlights. In the County Division 1 Men, Oxford Sports A and North Oxford A are both currently undefeated and whoever wins the match between the two teams on 4th June is likely to win the league. Watch this space or, even better, go to North Oxford LTC on Sunday 4th June and watch the match! On the women’s side, North Oxford A are in top spot and looking well placed to take the County Division 1 title.
North Oxford Men are also playing in the Aegon Regional League and are currently joint top of their Division (South West – East) with Maidenhead LTC. Their match on Sunday 21st May against Maidenhead could well decide who wins the Division and promotion into next year’s National League. Another one to watch.
Turning to the Babolat Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed Leagues, we are only three weeks into a season that runs through until September.Too early to spot potential winners. Again, the results are available on-line with the new scoring system (one point for each set won) being generally well received. So far we have only had one match (Division 4 Women, Thame B v Oxford Sports B) going the full 12 sets. Thame eventually emerged the winner 7 – 5, but Oxford Sports at least came away with 5 points to show for their efforts. Under the old summer scoring it would have been 3 points for Thame and “nul points” for Oxford Sports!
