The 14U Boys Oxfordshire county team were delivered with a home draw at Oxford Sports LTC for the qualification phase of the 14U County Cup 2019.
The Oxfordshire team was: Bobby Hornby, Arthur Manson, Adam Pinner, Ignas Grusnius and Max Struthers.
The team were in a round robin group with Dorset and Buckinghamshire. Middlesex, Berkshire and Gloucestershire would also play at the same venue in the other round robin group.
Oxfordshire competed fiercely on Day 1 against Dorset and Day 2 against Buckinghamshire but lost several very tight matches. Ignas Grusnius provided the only victory for the team with a fine performance in his singles against Buckinghamshire.
Oxfordshire 0-6 Dorset
Oxfordshire 1-5 Buckinghamshire
The Oxfordshire team would play off for 5th and 6th place in the group against Gloucestershire on Day 3. There were fantastic performances by Max Struthers, Arthur Manson and Bobby Hornby that put Oxfordshire 3-1 up after the singles. This was followed up with two swift victories in the doubles with Bobby and Arthur teaming up at Pair 1 and Max and Adam at Pair 2 resulting in a 5-1 win.
Oxfordshire 5-1 Gloucestershire
It was a brilliant way to finish the weekend and a deserved victory for the team. Every player won at least one match over the weekend and with 4 of the 5 boys available for selection again next year, the future is bright for a strong performance in 2020 for Oxfordshire.
The team also enjoyed a team social with the girls’ team at the Kassam stadium on the Sunday evening and this really highlighted how well they all get on as a team. Congratulations to Max Struthers who was clearly the best ten pin bowler out of them all.
I would like to thank Zuzanna Crawford and Angela Davey for their refereeing over the weekend, the staff at Oxford Sports LTC and to all of the Oxfordshire players’ parents for their support throughout every fixture.
Congratulations are due to Middlesex for winning the group and as a team we wish them the very best in the finals.
