Day One vs Devon (6-3 WIN)

The first match is always an exciting prospect for the players but with three debutantes the day couldn’t come soon enough. Potentially a tough opening match and we had to be at our best from the start. This was eclipsed by going 2-1 up after the first round of matches with Jon and Ben winning the deciding rubber 7-5 in the third set. We continued to win the next rounds that day 2-1, resulting in a 6-3 win. A great start to the week.

Jon & Ben, 3 wins
Nigel & Jack, 1 win
Louis & Cameron (Guy subbed in), 2 wins

Day Two vs Shropshire (6-3 WIN)

We owed Shropshire a thrashing after they sent us down at winter county cup two years ago, so the team talk was very simple that day!

We got off to a great start and raced to a 3-0 lead with Louis & Guy beating their first pair in three sets. The rest of the day also went our way with another 6-3 win chalked up for Oxfordshire.

Jon & Ben, 3 wins
Nigel & Jack, 2 wins
Guy & Louis (Cameron subbed in), 1 win

Day Three vs Cornwall (6-3 WIN)

The Oxfordshire team where in high spirits with two wins from two under their belts and felt very confident heading into the third day against Cornwall.

Cornwall took an early lead and we headed into the first break 1-2 down. Jon & Ben who were undefeated so far where up next against a pair who had won 15 from 15 matches the previous year and it was surely going to be a tough test for them. This proved to be the match of the day with great quality shown from both pairs but the Oxfordshire boys showed their class with a 6-4 6-4 win.

This inspired a clean sweep of all the remaining matches in the second round with us going into lunch 4-2 up. Once again a good showing from Oxfordshire proved too strong in the final round winning 2-1 so overall score of 6-3.

Jon & Ben, 3 wins
Jack & Nigel (Cameron subbed in), 1 win
Louis & Guy, 2 wins

Day Four vs Glos (5-4 WIN)

Playing the local rivals, who were fighting relegation on their home turf was never going to be easy prospect. Knowing that if we win and other results were to go our way, we could be promoted by the end of the day.

With it being the hottest day on record, short matches where the key to success and this was shown by the excellent first pair of Jon & Ben who won every match, losing only 6 games in each.

Massive effort from Louis & Guy who played 9 sets in the heat and winning the deciding match 6-0 in the final set when we were locked 4 – 4.

Gritty 5 -4 win for us.

The team stayed to watch Shropshire beat Staffordshire, which meant we were mathematically promoted with one match still to play.

Jon & Ben, 3 wins
Nigel & JACK (Cameron subbed in ), 1 win
Louis & Guy, 1 win

Day Five vs Staffordshire (5-4 WIN)

Our spirits where high and we were ready to seal first place in the group and round off a great week.

The pressure was on us straight away, as due to injuries Glos couldn’t field a team against Devon, thus giving them a 9-0 walkover. This meant that we had to win to gain first spot.

With some tired legs and the heat taking most of our energy from the day before, we battled on against a slightly weaker Staffs team who played a couple of reserve team players as their position in the group was safe.

It wasn’t our best performance, but we did what we set out to achieve and won 5-4 giving the team the first place they richly deserved. This first place was the first time in over 15 years that Oxfordshire has won the group at summer county cup.

Jon & Ben, 3 wins
Nigel & Jack, 2 wins
Louis & Guy, 0 wins

Overall a great week had by all and the tennis was amazing.

A big thanks to all that came and supported the team, including: Cameron’s family, Guys family, Mark Wilkinson, Christian Petersen, Gordon Tanner as well as Kate (Louis’s Aunty who is from Glos but converted to Oxfordshire after watching us every day.)

Also many thanks to Tennis Oxfordshire for their continued support both financially and via social media in being able to share our results, photos and videos as quickly as they did.

A final special mention to Jon Maskens and Ben Calnan who joined the 15 club, an exclusive club for players who won all 15 of their county week matches. This feat was made even greater by them only dropping one set all week. We have traced back our records and believe that this great achievement is an Oxfordshire first, certainly in the men’s team.
