Seniors Inter County Championships
Oxfordshire Over 70s Men
In our first match at Worthing, Sussex presented very strong opposition and despite the efforts of Rob Jones/Jon Dilworth in just losing a third set tie break in their second rubber, the match was lost 8-0. The journey home was especially long!
Our first home match against Devon was played at the Delta Centre, Swindon as the Whitehorse Centre was being used for the General Election. It was a closer match than the 6-2 result suggests with Rob and Jon providing the one victory.
It was a long wet journey to Swansea for the South Wales match in early July. It was a repeat scenario to the previous match, again with a 6-2 loss. South Wales finally finished top of the division.
Now to the ‘wooden spoon’ match against Gloucestershire played at Woodstock. Oxfordshire scored a 6-2 victory with three third set tie breaks which all went in our favour. Bill Adams and Ian Jelfs played their only match of the season. By some way this was our best match of the season, on and off the court.
Overall, we are pleased not to finish bottom of the division and slightly frustrated not to have finished higher which may have been possible with a couple of achievable drawn matches. A total of eight players were used during the season. Roger Selby (3), Rob Jones (4), Ian Jelfs (1), Mike Morgan (1), William Ingram (1), Tony Gale (2), Jon Dilworth (3) and Bill Adams (1).
In addition to the regular matches we managed to arrange friendlies with Warwick BC, The Roehampton Club and East Gloucester TC.
It has been a great opportunity for the team to play in some great matches and enjoy the friendly banter afterwards.
Roger Selby, Captain
Oxfordshire Over 65s Ladies
The over 65s Ladies just managed to avoid relegation by winning the last match of the season. We had three home games (good) against Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire and South Wales but our two away games were very far away – Lancashire and Devon !
We lost 0-4 in both our away fixtures, probably not helped by the very long day spent travelling there and back, had two losing draws against Lincolnshire and South Wales but managed to beat Hertfordshire 3-1.
Many thanks to everyone who played in the team, especially to Jenny Tucker and Caroline Fox who stepped in at late notice when I had my hip operation. The ladies who played were Norah Laurie (5), Linda Molyneux (5), Andi Padbury (3), Ces Wheeler (3), Caroline Fox (2), Jenny Tucker (2).
And a very big thank you for my lovely orchid at the end of the season from the team; it was a lovely gesture.
Next year we are taking this team, minus Ces who is too young!, up to the Ladies Over 70s when hopefully we will do well.
Andi Padbury, Team Captain
Oxfordshire Over 60s Women
We are a relatively new team, first playing in 2016 when we won Division 3. We then found ourselves in Division 2B – quite a big jump as two of the teams we played were Hampshire and Hertfordshire who had just dropped from Division 1.
However, we have held our own this season and become much sharper. So much so, we have managed to stay in in Division 2, coming 4th out of 6. The highlight was beating Scotland 3 rubbers to 1.
A big thank you to my co-captain, Jenny Corfield and also Paul Butcher, rackets manager of OHRC who enabled us to host our home games at Nuffield health club.
Finally thank you to all the over 60 team players. We are a small, close group and looking forward to playing together next year.
Lynda Sutton, Co-Captain
Oxfordshire Over 55s Men
rubbers won / rubbers lost
Jeremy Wood 6 2
Tony Munsey 6 4
John Merrifield 3 5
Bruce Young 3 1
John Brewster 3 2
Mark Taylor 2 1
Craig Amison-Smith 0 2
After a shaky start, losing the first three matches 3-2 in rubbers with many matches going to tie breaks, it looked as if survival in the top division would be beyond us. However, convincing wins in the last two matches saw us finish third, above rivals Hertfordshire and Devon on rubbers won – even though we shared the same points score!
Thanks to those who played, especially Tony Munsey (100%), Jeremy Wood (80% and who also arranged our practices), Jon Merrifield (80%) – a great performance by all who played in the face of adversity!
John Brewster, Team Captain
Oxfordshire Over 50s Women
We had a tough but enjoyable season in Division 2A. All our five matches were close (and included playing singles) but we only managed to win one which might not be enough to keep us in this division.
Many thanks to all who played: Mary Joyner, Maddy Mitchell, Liz Bamber, Tracey Hodson Alice Protheroe, Dani Heath, Maxine Perkins, Dawn Fairchild, Ana Coggon, Lucy Taylor, Liz Gilkes and Liz Bowles.
We’re looking forward to next season!
Mary Joyner & Maddy Mitchell, Joint Captains
