The Oxfordshire 8U County team finished in 7th place (out of 10) at the inter-county East Region Red tournament in Cambridge last Sunday.
Our team was represented by Olivia Wood, Tallis Annesley, Leonie Caron, Aaliyah Porter, Sofia Johri and, because of illness, a very last-minute addition to the team, Jasmine Koc. Thanks are owed to Jasmine and her family for stepping in at such short notice.
The girls played in Group B against teams from Essex (overall Winners), the always-strong Berkshire, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire. Each county match consisted of 6 rubbers in singles format. We ended up in 4th place after the round of group matches, which allowed our team to progress to the play-off stage.
Our team had a chance to take 5th place in the overall standings, but we lost the 1st play-off battle to Norfolk 2-4 in a really close tie.
Our last match in the tournament for 7th place turned out to be a real nerve-wracking thriller for coaches and team supporters. As it turned out every point mattered. Drawing in rubbers at 3-3, we won 50-46 on game points. That win put lots of smiles on the faces of our determined players and boosted the level of positive energy after challenging day.
Our players showed a great team spirit and character in key moments of the tournament which helped us to reach a better result overall than in previous years. In particular, the younger and lower-seeded players proved their abilities and skills against strong opponents.
The player with the best results in our team on the day was one of the youngest in our team, Aaliyah Porter, a true competitor with great potential, who managed to win 5 out of 6 matches!
